If your SQL Server has become unstable or is unable to restart due to some unknown (or) known issue, and you were not able to backup your SQL Server Data Store folder before the shutdown, then please read ahead before reinstalling your operating system.
  • Details
In this article, I will explain to you how to safely backup your SQL Server Data Store folder without data loss (This all depends on if the drive is in good working order and the C:\ drive has not become corrupted, if the drive is corrupted, then this may not work for you, if that is your case, then I suggest sending your drive off to a specialist in data recovery methods)
  • Recreate Issue
Operating System (Server) needs to be reinstalled due to a crash or other unknown (or) known issue, and you were unable to do a backup of your SQL Server Data Store folder.
  • Resolve Issue
If you are among the unfortunate ones that have installed SQL Server onto their C:\ drive, then before I start this article, I ask that when you reinstall your server or computer that you create a separate partition (or) better yet, purchase an external hard drive to install and store your sensitive data on, as the C:\ drive is not in no way a good place to store this type of information on).

Please follow all the steps below.

    Step #1:
Remove your hard drive from your server (or) work system.
    Step #2:
Add your hard drive to another machine either by ribbon or usb attachment cable.
    Step #3:
Once the drive is attached to the other computer and is initialized within windows, perform the following actions as described and in order.
3a: Browse your My Computer and find the drive.
3b: Browse the drive to the following location (yours will vary): C:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\
3c: Right click on the Data folder itself and choose [Copy].
4d: Browse your computer hard drive(s) and find a safe place to store your Data folder.
5e: Create a folder inside of a partition space of your computer, called: SQL Server\
6f: Right click in the folder you just created and choose [Paste]
7g: Remove the drive from your computer and insert it back into the other machine and reinstall the system, keeping in mind that the best way to do an install of your operating system is to create a partition for your operating system, rather home or server and create extra partitions for your data to be stored. This is a very safe practice that all need to incorporate into their infrastructure.
