Issue DetailsC:\Users\username
This folder is where your user profile folders are located by default.
As we all know, anything can happen at any time that could cause us to lose the data stored in this default location.
Having more than a single partition or drive in your computer or attached to it is a wise choice.
When you have more storage (Drive partitions or extra drives), you can relocate your precious folders and data to these areas without the worry of the system crashing and losing your data.
Now, when storing your information on the same drive, you still stand a chance of losing your data if the drive malfunctions or crashes.
It is best to purchase an external drive and a USB enclosure specifically for your data backup and storage.
I strongly recommend that you purchase a:
- Hard drive of 500Gb or larger
- USB Hard Drive Enclosure
- Or, if you have the space and extra cables, an Internal Hard Drive would be better.
If you purchase an already-enclosed USB Drive, you are going to pay double or triple the value of the hardware, which is not worth it, as hardware enclosures are cheap and hard drives are even cheaper in certain markets.
Resolve IssueIn Windows 7, Microsoft has made it much easier for you to relocate your folders, because they know how precious your data is to you and your business or family.
Locate your User Folder
C:\Users\username (Change the username for your actual username)
Once you open this Folder you will be faced with the following Sub-Folders
[Profile Folder Locations]- AppData (This is application program data, stores important information for your profile programs)
- Contacts (This has your contacts' information)
- Desktop (This is your Desktop items)
- Downloads (This is your downloaded files Folder)
- Favorites (This is your Favorites, stores links from Internet Addresses)
- Links (These are links
- My Documents (This stores all your documents
- My Music (This is your Music Folder)
- My Pictures (This is your Pictures Folder)
- My Videos (This is your Video Folder)
- Saved Games (This is your Saved Game Data (This is Windows 7 Games only))
- Searches (These are your most recent searches)
Let's start with My Music
- Right-click on [My Music]
- Choose [Properties]
- Click on the [Location] tab
- You will see
C:\Users\username\My Music
In my case, I will link this to my network music folder. So I am first going to open my network share and browse to the Music folder.
In Windows 7, the location in the address bar to my Music Folder by Default is:
>> Network-Computer > My Music >
Translated is:
\\Network-Computer\My Music - Now. Click [Apply]
You will receive a prompt similar to this.
[Window Title]
Move Folder
[Content]
Do you want to move all of the files from the old location to the new location?
Old location: C:\Users\YourUser\My Music
New location: B:\Profile\YourUser\My Music
We recommend moving all of the files so that programs needing to access the Folder's content can do so.
[Yes][No][Cancel]
If you have Music stored in your old folder location, choose [Yes] to move everything to the new location.
The amount of data in the Folder will determine how long it will take to relocate the data.
Once this is complete, you will be able to access your folders in the new location, using the Windows shortcuts.
Now, click on the [Start] button and then click on [Music], and this will load your new folder location with all your Music in it.
Perform the same actions on all the folders that you want to move. I strongly suggest that you do it to all that you feel is precious to you.
UPDATE: Add folders to your [
Send To][
Menu Option].
First, locate your Send To Folder.
C:\Users\(YOUR USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendToNow, choose the Folder you want to add. In this Example, we are going to use the FONTS folder.
C:\WINDOWS\FONTS- [Right-click] on the [Fonts] Folder,
- [Drag and Drop] into your [SendTo] folder.
- Choose to [Create Shortcut]
Now, when you want to install fonts, you can do it easily without having to go to the Fonts folder.
