Issue DetailsIn this article, we will go through how to turn off smphost. When it is not needed, it should not be installed or running.
Turning off this feature is essential if you notice it using up a lot of memory.
Recreate Issue- Right-click on the [Taskbar].
- Choose [Task Manager]
- Look for [smphost]
If it is using over 500 MB of memory and is not in use, proceed to Resolve below.
Resolve Issue- Right-click on the Start Menu.
- Choose [Control Panel]
- Then choose [Administrative Tools]
- Then choose [Serices]
(HINT: When Services is open, right-click on its icon on the [Task Bar] and choose to Pin to [Task Bar]. This will give you quick access to Services in the future.) - Scroll down to [Microsoft Storage Spaces SMP]
- Double click (To open) (OR) Right Click and choose [Properties]
- Once you have the Properties Dialog open, do the following.
Startup type: [Disable] - Service Status: [Stop] (It might not stop immediately, and may give an error. Make sure that you Disable it first)
- Click [Apply]
- Click [OK]
Once it has stopped, it will be removed from memory and the [
Task Manager].
