KB Issue

When trying to update the BIOS of your system, you may experience the Windows Configuration Error.

Issue Details

If you have already UPGRADED the BIOS of the computer in the past, you will not be able to update it again, unless you boot from a Floppy or USB drive to do so. This is due in part to a Registry value that indicates the system has had a BIOS update.

If this is the case, you will receive the following Error.

BIOS FLASH ERROR

Windows Configuration Error

An error was encountered trying to configure Windows to
allow flashing, please reboot and try again. If this error
re-occurs, please contact technical help.

Recreate Issue

Once you UPGRADE the BIOS of your Dell System, you will receive this error every time you attempt a future BIOS UPGRADE.

Resolve Issue

Registry Editing Warning
It is strongly recommended that you make a backup of your Registry by following these Steps completely

[Open Registry Editor]

Click on [Start]
Then [Run]
Type in [regedit] hit [Enter]

Once the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following key on the left-hand side tree.
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\DellBIOS

Copy

Search Site

Search Google

[Export Registry Key Values]

Right click on the [DellBIOS] key
choose [Export]
Save to your drive (A suggestion: My Documents\Backup, or another drive entirely, like a USB drive.)
Then right click on the [DellBIOS] and choose [DELETE]

Close out of the Registry Editor, and reboot the computer.

[BIOS UPDATE]

Once the system is back on your Desktop

[Right Click] on the BIOS Update file
Choose [Run as Administrator]
Follow the prompts.
The system will reboot automatically to update the BIOS.

If everything goes according to specs, your system should reboot properly.
