When you open Task Manager, you see multiple instances of svchost.exe. The svchost runs multiple instances for difference programs that may be running on your system, as many as 5 or more can run at a single time.

Programs that are running in the background, (or) that are running on the computer take up your systems resources which include CPU and Memory. These processes can really take a toll on a system, and sometimes it is best to end the resource to free of cpu or memory that is needed for other applications to continue to run (or) even to close out properly. - Resolve Issue
