After you join a domain with Windows XP, your computer may sit on the "Applying Computer Settings" dialog forever, or may never get passed loading. - Details
After joining a domain, you might notice that when you try to logon to your system, you are unable to get passed the dialog.Applying Computer Settings - Recreate Issue
To recreate this issue:
Do not set a static IP or DNS for your network card.
Leave it default, to recreate this issue. - Resolve Issue
To resolve this issue:
Setting a static IP and also adding the IP Address to the Domain DNS Server will resolve this issue.
Follow these steps:
Shutdown the computer, and if you are stuck on the [Applying computer settings] screen.
Do a hard Shutdown (Meaning, hit the kill switch to cut off your computer)
Logon with the Administrator that you setup during the installation of your OS.
(This will be the user you originally were logged on with, when you joined the domain)
Once you have successfully logged on with your Admin user, perform the following.
Click on the [Start] menu
Right Click on [My Network Places]
Go to [Properties]
Right Click on the [Network Card]
Go to [Properties]
Once the [Properties] dialog open.
Double Click on [Internet Protocol (TCP/IP]
Check the [Use the following IP Address]
Type in your network computer IP Address, this will be given to you by your administrator.
Example of a network IP Assignment.IP Address: 192.168.2.8
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Check the [Use the following DNS Server addresses:]
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.2.7 (This is the DNS Server on your domain)
Alternative DNS Server: 000.000.000.000 (This will be the DNS Server of your ISP)
Once you have all the settings completed.
Log off of the Admin account, and then log in with your Domain user account.
You should now notice that the dialog's on the screen flash by, and before you know it, the system is setting on your desktop.
